Classroom Close-Up: Counselors, NHS

For this Classroom Close-Up we are taking a walking tour around the counseling department at Northville High School. Grace DeVore is 1 of 9 counselors at NHS and explains all the different resources that are available in their office and how students can sign up for an appointment.

Hi, I'm Ms. DeVore, I'm one of the counselors here at Northville. I'm excited to show you the close-up to our classroom here in the counseling office. Come on in. So when students or parents get here to the counseling office they can either check in with Ms. or use the Google form to check in and that will notify their counselor that they're here and they're ready to meet. If your student is unsure of who their counselor is we also have these introduction sections here on this bulletin board, so your student can find their graduating class and then the last name and then they can know which counselor they want to meet with. Over here we also have some directions so that way they know where they're headed, our counseling office is pretty big this way so it spans a lot of different offices but we've got nine counselors here most of them alphabetic and then some of them are going to be for social emotional needs. So Ms. Shamus works with everybody in every grade level which is amazing. Over here we have a lot of our College information. So when we have college visits they will drop off information here so students can access it whenever they need to. And then over around this corner we've got Zen Den where some students will be eating lunches. Then we can go stop in with one of our counselors Miss Manoogian who's making a schedule change. So Ms. Manoogian is right in here and she's helping a student with a schedule change. And so down throughout the rest of this hallway we've got more of our College information posted, we've got a lot of our penants up here, some scholarship information, so we're always happy to help students with college and career readiness, we like talking about academics and we're here for pretty much any needs that students have. We're also here for any social emotional concerns, if they're feeling overwhelmed, we're here to help talk those things through. So your student can always stop by or sign up for an appointment on our website. Another opportunity that we offer to our students to talk to counselors and make connections is our lunch drop-ins. So students of any counselors caseload are welcome to come by during lunch just to speak with a counselor. We're happy to answer questions about schedules, about colleges, or anything really general. So students are able to come in for a drop in and they can fill out a QR code if they want to set up an appointment with their counselor.
